Assessing the Health Impacts of the Spill

It’s link day! I have a story on the main page about the possible human health impacts of the spill—and the difficulty in tracking those effects. As I’ve written before, the scariest impacts could be to the psyches of Gulf residents—especially as this slow-motion disaster moves on and on.

Can Polar Bears Keep Their Heads Above Water in a Warming World?

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, like a seal or a walrus, which might come as a surprise given that they’re usually pictured on land. But polar bears spend a lot of their time in the waters of the Arctic, fishing or swimming among the sea ice. They may look awkward in the water, but no creature with paws is a better swimmer.

There is no doubt that there will be physical issues connected with the massive quantities of petrochemical exposure to clean up crews and others in the Gulf areas. But the idea that the damage will be psychological is way off the mark. This is merely an excuse to start feeding dangerous drugs to people that need real help. The problem is the severe lack of education of what industrial chemical exposure can do to people and how it can be remedied. This lack of education extends to the medical community and as a result the “it’s all in your head” crowd shows up and starts pushing prozac. The same thing happened after 9/11. Rescue workers were becoming ill and no one could figure out the problem. The solution ended up being the New York Rescue Workers Detox Program, which did work. This may end up being the solution in the Gulf as well. http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2008/03/the-new-york-rescue-workers-detoxification-project/
