Talking Meat and Antibiotics

I had the chance to go on the Leonard Lopate show on WNYC yesterday afternoon to talk about the renewed push to regulate antibiotics used for growth promotion in farm animals. With the Food and Drug Administration now urging meat producers to limit the amount of drugs they give their animals—over concern about the rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria—and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s bill to restrict the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in animals gaining some ground, the issue is fresher than ever. On the radio with me was Maryn McKenna, a medical writer and author of the recent book Superbug, which details the threat of antibiotic-resistant infections. (She’s the one who sounds a lot smarter.)     Up to 73,000 American bridges are considered “structurally deficient,” and the consequences of that can be as terrible as they seem. The most recent large-scale bridge disaster in the U.S. occurred in 2007, when the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed during rush hour, killing 13 people and injuring 145. Scarily, the bridge had earned its structurally deficient label 17 years prior, but that simply meant it would, in theory, be replaced by 2020, depending on the availability of funds.

    We need to get the FDA off its duff and stop “urging” the limitations of antibiotics in the food chain and get them to start wearing their hat and actually impose and enforce rules on this. Pussyfooting around with an industry that is intimately involved in the health of its public and clearing putting that health in the backseat after profit is not fulfilling the agency’s mandate.
